CONSECRATED TO THE LORD

Against the backdrop of the Rome of the Popes, the heritage of furnishings from the Ghetto synagogues, now mostly preserved in the Jewish Museum, developed over three centuries. A few wealthy families offered for the glory of the Lord worship objects commissioned from the most important and innovative Roman silversmiths, although Jews were heavily taxed and the majority of the population was in poverty. The new discoveries, reached through the analysis of archival documents, inscriptions, and punches, and with the help of a very rich photographic collection, make this volume a valuable contribution to the knowledge and appreciation of what one community, albeit a limited one, can offer. It is a testimony that will be a point of reference both for studies on Jewish art, the history of the Jews of Rome, and for those who appreciate this extraordinary chapter of art history.
